Benefits of Zataria multiflora Boiss in Experimental Model of Mouse Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition of the intestine with unknown etiology involving multiple immune, genetic and environmental factors. We were interested to examine the effect of total extract from Zataria multiflora Boiss, a folk medicinal plant on prevention and treatment of experimental IBD. Z. multiflora was administered (400, 600, 900 p.p.m.) through drinking water to IBD mice induced by intrarectal administration of acetic acid. Prednisolone was used as the standard drug for compari… Show more

“…This could be referred to the effect of the aggressor agent (acetic acid) inducing colonic injury resulting in epithelial mucosal damage and subsequent inflammation. The inflammation caused by acetic acid attributed to entry of soluble protonated form of the acid into the epithelium leading to massive intracellular acidification resulting in massive epithelial damage (24). Inflammation is a protective response intended to eliminate the initial cause of cell injury as well as the necrotic cells and tissues resulting from the original insult.…”

“…Transgenic TGF-a mice (Sandgren et al, 1993;Wagner et al, 2001), LSL-kRas G12D mice (Hingorani et al, 2003) and p48-cre mouse (Nakhai et al, 2007) are described. LSL-kRrasG12D mice were crossed to p48-Cre animals to generate mice with pancreas-specific (p48-kRas) and activate oncogenic kRas (Khasawneh et al, 2009).…”

“…On the 8th day colitis was induced by intrarectal administration of 150 µl of 5% acetic acid (pH 2.5), 3 cm from the anal margin. Extract treatment was continued up to 10th day (Nakhai et al, 2006;Sonawane et al, 2011).…”
