Benign lymphoepithelial cyst of parotid gland: Review and case report

Abstract: Benign lymphoepithelial cyst (BLC), also known as branchial cyst, is an infrequent lesion usually occurs in the parotid gland or the lateral cervical area including lymph nodes. It occurs due to the process of lymphocyte-induced cystic ductular dilatation and is always diagnosed postoperatively by histopathological examination (HPE). These dysontogenetic lesions are usually found in the lateral neck but can also be located in the salivary glands, mostly in the parotids. A 35-year-old male reported to Governmen… Show more

“…The histological findings in our case were in accordance with those reported in human medicine. The LEC was predominantly lined by a squamous epithelium surrounded by lymphoid tissue [1,3]. Although the tingible body macrophages, lymphocyte exocytosis, and multinucleated giant cells may be present [18], the latter was not demonstrated in our case.…”

“…It has mainly been discovered in the human head-and-neck region, such as the oral cavity and salivary glands (more commonly, the parotid and, rarely, the submandibular gland), most often in the lateral cervical area just below the angle of the mandible, including the lymph nodes. It rarely affects the thyroid gland, lungs, and pancreas [1].…”

“…Normal tissue for the study was selected more than 5 mm far from the infiltrative edge of the tumor. This numerical criterion was applied because tissue that is at least 5 mm or more from invasive carcinoma is considered free of tumor cells when the adequacy of surgical margins is evaluated in the pathologic report 66,67 . One paraffin-embedded normal tongue tissue block per case was selected with informed consent to prepare tissue slides for histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses.…”

“…In branchial lymphoepithelial cyst (BLEC), which also referred to as branchial cleft cyst, the remnant of a branchial arch develops into a cyst, causing swelling [1]. Branchial cleft cysts are classified into four groups depending on which branch cleft they originated from, with locations ranging from the external auditory canal (in first branchial cleft cysts) to the lower part of the neck (in fourth branchial cleft cysts).…”
