Benthic community metabolism and microbial dynamics in the Gulf of Trieste (Northern Adriatic Sea)

Abstract: Benthic 02-fluxes of sublittoral sediments were measured in situ using continuous recording by polarographlc 02-sensors. Three stations (7, 15, and 22 m deep) were investigated at ca 2 mo intervals in the Northern Adriatic Sea over a 19 mo period High chl a contents of the sediments were found in spring (March. April) and fall (September, October) while sediment bacterial numbers fluctuated in a n inconsistent pattern. Porewater dissolved organic carbon (DOC) exhibited strong seasonal variation with highest co… Show more

“…A strong relation between TOM and depth was also reported in a previous study carried out along the nearby coastline of Monte San Bartolo (Covazzi- Harriague and Bittoni 2003). These findings were in accordance with the frequently observed greater retention of sediment-bound organic matter and microorganisms in the finest sediments (Herndl et al 1989;Van Duyl and Kop 1994;Albertelli et al 1999;Covazzi Harriague et al 2006). Both the structure and abundance of meiofaunal and macrofaunal communities resulted as being significantly different between inshore and offshore stations, especially when the interaction of season was considered.…”

“…Significance of bacteria in the seagrass system Bacterial densities in Prelo Bay were high when compared to other coastal areas (De Flaun & Mayer 1983, Meyer-Reil 1983, Montagna et al 1983, Herndl et al 1989, Delille et al 1990, Ferrara-Guerrero & Bianchi 1990, Amon & Herndl 1991, Albertelli et al 1992 and bacterial biomass was a significant fraction (on average 6.23 %) of the sedimentary organic carbon. This value appears to be similar to those reported for deep-sea sediments (on average 9.5 %; ) but high if compared to other areas of the Ligurian Sea (3.5%; Fabiano .…”

“…Other studies of sediment O2 uptake rates at similar latitudes have shown temperature variations with a Q,,, of 2 to 3 (Jsrgensen 1977, Kanneworff & Christensen 1986, Hall et al 1989, Herndl et al 1989). There was a significant increase in the diffusive 0, uptake, 345 to 504 pm01 m-, h-', in March-April 1988 in response to the settling of the spring phytoplankton bloom.…”
