Benzodiazepine prescribing to the Swiss adult population: results from a national survey of community pharmacies

Abstract: Benzodiazepine prescriptions were appropriate for most patients and thus were prescribed in therapeutic doses, as indicated in the treatment guidelines. On the other hand, our survey showed that 1.6% of the patients had prescriptions for long time periods at very high doses, indicating an abuse or dependence on benzodiazepines in this subgroup.

“…This is in agreement with findings about the use of BDZs in various countries (Lagnaoui et al, 2004;Neutel, 2005;Petitjean et al, 2007;Hollingworth and Siskind, 2010;Holm et al, 2012;Sonnenberg et al, 2012;Cloos et al, 2015;Olfson et al, 2015), as well as Brazil (Firmino et al, 2011;Brunoni et al, 2013), and may reflect tendencies in the general use of BDZs. Contrary to our hypothesis and findings from other studies, the proportions of women among BDZ users and BDZ non-users were almost identical, and female gender did not emerge as a significant predictor of BDZ use in OCD individuals.…”

“…We also hypothesised that BDZ use was more likely in older and female patients with OCD, based on studies in various countries showing that BDZ use tends to be positively correlated with age and female gender (Lagnaoui et al, 2004;Neutel, 2005;Petitjean et al, 2007;Hollingworth and Siskind, 2010;Firmino et al, 2011;Holm et al, 2012;Sonnenberg et al, 2012;Brunoni et al, 2013;Cloos et al, 2015;Olfson et al, 2015).…”

“…For instance, it is important to say that isolated auto-medication produces harmful and undesirable consumption. These drugs, which belong to a group of small tranquilizers, due to their wide therapeutic power, are the reason for abuse and are prescribed in excess in general medical practice (2)(3) .…”

“…Despite the risks associated with the use of this class of drugs (falls [13], fractures, accidents at work [14][15][16][17][18][19]), the utilisation of benzodiazepines increased during the 5 years of observation, with an estimated increase of more than 400% between 2011 and 2012, an increase less pronounced in 2013 and a slight decline in 2014 and 2015 (Fig. 1).…”
