Benzyl alcohols as accelerators in the photoinitiated cationic polymerization of epoxide monomers

Abstract: Benzyl alcohols display marked accelerating effects on the onium salt photoinitiated cationic ring‐opening polymerizations of epoxide monomers. The participation of radicals in these polymerizations was demonstrated, and a pronounced accelerating effect on the polymerization rate was observed depending on the character of the substituent on the benzene ring of the alcohol. 4‐Methoxybenzyl alcohol was considerably more reactive than benzyl alcohol, whereas the analogous chloro‐ and nitrosubstituted compounds we… Show more

“…So, they may be used as promising heatresistant additives to improve the thermal performances of silicone or silicon rubbers. [17,18] Furthermore, due to their designable composition and suitable rheological property, they can also be used as ceramic precursors and easily be converted into silicon nitride/silicon carbide composites (Si 3 N 4 /SiC) based ceramics. [19] Due to these merits, study of these polymers gains significance both for fundamental research and further industrial applications.…”

“…The presence of noncross-linked areas might favour a mobilization of the propagating cationic species that would normally be sequestrated within the highly cross-linked photopolymer network. [36,37] Consequently, an enhanced contribution of AM mechanism might be mainly responsible for an acceleration of the epoxy photopolymerization kinetics in the presence of silica.…”

“…In particular, certain benzylic alcohols have been shown to greatly accelerate the cationic ring-opening polymerizations of epoxides. [32] Figure 13 shows the effect of the addition of Figure 11.
