Berberine inhibits angiogenesis in glioblastoma xenografts by targeting the VEGFR2/ERK pathway

Abstract: Context: Berberine is used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years with recent reports of its anticancer activity. Objective: To test antiangiogenic effects of berberine on human glioblastoma and clarify involvement of the VEGFR2/ERK pathway.Materials and methods: Cell viability, proliferation and migration assays were performed to determine in vitro antiangiogenic effects of berberine (6.25–200 μmol/L, 6–48 h). Ectopic and orthotopic xenograft models in BALB/c nude mice were induced to determine… Show more

“…It up-regulates plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a tumor suppressor that down-regulates urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and antagonizes uPA receptor to suppress metastasis in human hepatocellular carcinoma Bel-7402 and SMMC-7721 cells [143]. Berberine also inhibits epithelial mesenchymal transition through PI3K/Akt pathway in murine melanoma B16 cells, [151], and suppresses angiogenesis in glioblastoma U87 xenograft mice and HUVECs [152,153].…”

“…Berberine (1, Figure 1) is one of the best characterized natural compounds with diverse pharmacological effects, including anticancer [5][6][7], anti-inflammatory [8,9], cardioprotective [10,11] and enhancement of memory function [12][13][14] effects. Its antidiabetic [15][16][17], antiobesity and anti-hyperlipidaemic [16,18] effects have also been well established.…”

“…glabriusculum. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for years, and is shown to be effective against IR and obesity, particularly against diabetes type 2 and hypercholesterolemic [6,7]. There is recent evidence indicating that Ber offers promise for treating PCOSassociated IR.…”
