Traditional urban wastewater treatment plants (UWTPs) are deficiently efficient in eliminating most contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), comprising antibiotics, antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARB & ARGs). Such pollutants lead to some worry for nature and human health. This work discusses the performance of the best available technologies (BATs) for dealing with urban wastewater (UWW) to eliminate CECs and ARB & ARGs. Ozonation, activated carbon adsorption, chemical disinfectants, UV radiation, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and membrane filtration are debated with a view to their potential to efficaciously reduce CECs and ARB & ARGs. Probable treatment trains involving the BATs are compared. In spite of the huge improvements acquired in terms of applying AOPs and understanding their mechanisms in removing ARB & ARGs, transformation products (TPs) of the antibiotics existing may be generated, which may be less bio-decomposable, more poisonous and biologically strong, juxtaposed to the parent compounds. Therefore, attempts have to be concentrated on defining the structure of such TPs and proving if these retain their core moieties, responsible for the antimicrobial activity of the antibiotic, probably comprising antimicrobial resistance to the surrounding microbes.

The shortcomings of conventional processes for treating urban wastewater subjected to secondary treatment, in order to use this water for irrigation, are well known. Alternative advanced treatment techniques are required instead. This study aims to use single-stage ultrafiltration (UF) or nanofiltration (NF) membrane processes to produce irrigation water from biologically treated urban wastewater. For this purpose, the effects of four process variables (membrane type, cross flow velocity, temperature, and transmembrane pressure) on process performance parameters (permeate flux, concentrations/removal efficiencies of contaminants) are analyzed through Taguchi experiment design. Temperature and membrane type are found to have the biggest effect on UF, whereas the membrane type is the most significant variable for the NF. Moreover, the use of membrane permeate for landscaping and agricultural irrigation based on optimal conditions is assessed with reference to the criteria imposed by national regulation/international guidelines. Water in various quality categories is produced using different settings for 28 distinct specific parameters with reference to the membrane type, process performance, and the irrigation method. The results indicate that single-stage UF or NF membranes with high recovery rates can be used for wastewater subjected to secondary treatment, to recover irrigation water at low pressure and high water permeate flux.

The use of microfluidic electrochemical reactors has been introduced several decades ago, but their application in the field of wastewater treatment is more recent (2010). The parallel development of electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) as promising technologies for effluent treatment make them good candidates to be implemented as thin film cells. This allows favoring the mass transfer, which is particularly interesting for heterogenous electro-oxidation. Moreover, the energy requirement is reduced, while there is possibility to treat low-conductivity solutions. This review intends to provide instructions on the main operating parameters to be optimized during the EAOPs treatment. Directions on engineering aspects have been given to overcome the main drawbacks of microreactors such as fouling, scaling and low treatment capacity, based on recent encouraging results given in literature. The promising development of hybrid processes that combine electro-separation with electro-conversion would also benefit from such reactor designs.
