We investigate the coalescence of drops undergoing random Brownian motion and evaporation. The evolution of the drop size spectrum is determined by solving a partial integro-differential equation with a kernel that describes the pairwise coalescence of drops. Numerical results for fuel injection with n-octane suggest that the size distribution of drops is determined by two competing processes, namely coalescence and evaporation. Nous Ctudions ici la coalescence de gouttes dans des conditions de dkplacement brownien alCatoire et d'kvaporation. L'Cvolution du spectre de la taille des gouttes est determinee par la rksolution d'une Bquation intkgro-diffkrentielle partielle avec un noyau qui dCcrit la coalescence par paire des gouttes. Les rksultats numkriques pour l'injection du fuel avec du n-octane suggkrent que la distribution de taille des gouttes est dCterminke par deux processus se faisant concurrence, B savoir la coalescence et l'kvaporation.

Double pulse holography is, for experimental investigations, an extremely valuable means of measuring transport processes in disperse phases. This method allows the single or two dimensional frequency distributions of particle size, velocity, momentum and energy to be determined for each recorded sub‐collective, with the additional possibility of checking the existence of their correlation. Being an imaging method, the distributions of the particles in space can be displayed along with the instantaneous values of the concentration and particle flux density. A complete and very exact evaluation of the holographic images, coupled with the certainty of image pairing, is one of the prerequisites of a successful application. The best evaluation in this sense is, at present, produced by a semi‐automatic, interactive system in which the assessment of certain crucial factors is left to an operator. Although the effort incurred by such a total evaluation is by no means insignificant, it is justified by the profusion of information to be obtained. The present report explains the whole concept including a programme system with which the primary data is further processed and with which a variety of results may be called up and displayed.

Pulse holography can be used as a method for the experimental investigation of transport processes that occur in flows of dispersed phases. Since a complete evaluation of a hologram involves the measurement and recording of the position of every individual particle, it delivers all the information about the spatial distribution of particles at the instant of exposure. An exact knowledge of the spatial distribution of the dispersed phase is particularly important for those chemical engineering processes which require the spatial distribution of particles to be as homogeneous as possible. Maximum homogeneity is achieved when the particles are distributed purely randomly. For this case, the distributions of distances between neighbouring particles are calculated. They represent a standard which can be adopted as the basis for the assessment of real particle distributions, such as exist momentarily in flows of dispersed phases and are determined by the evaluation of pulse holograms.
