Beta-Lactamase Activity in Anaerobic Bacteria

Abstract: A diverse group of anaerobic bacteria representing a spectrum of resistance to β-lactam antibiotics was studied to characterize their β-lactamase activity and relate it to resistance. The Bacteroides fragilis organisms had moderate resistance and produced a cephalosporinase with low activity. The Clostridium ramosum was intermediate in resistance and had intermediate, inducible β-lactamase activity. The B. clostridiiformis organism was hig… Show more

“…DISCUSSION Resistance of many B. fragilis strains to penicillin and cephalosporin (7,8), but susceptibility to carbenicillin, has been described before (14); carbenicillin has been suggested as a useful adjunct to the antimicrobial therapy of B. fragilis infections (18). Our findings of increased penicillin resistance among Bacteroides other than B. fragilis as well as a few C. perfringens strains confirm reports by other workers (12,15,19).…”

“…Penicillin resistance has been observed in Bacteroides species other than Bacteroides fragilis (12,15,19) as well as in some Clostridium species (19). In addition, many anaerobes have become resistant to tetracycline (13,15,16), and clindamycin-resistant Bacteroides strains have recently appeared (11).…”

“…Even in the six isolates with MICs greater than 32 ,ug of cefoxitin per ml, no enzymatic activity could be demonstrated with cefoxitin as a substrate. This result is in direct contrast to the finding of Weinrich and Del Bene (23). These workers have claimed that they can measure rates of hydrolysis of cefoxitin by B. fragilis ,B-lactamase that in some cases exceed those of cephamandole and even cephaloridine.…”

“…These beta-lactamases possess a high degree of activity against CM. Although the ability of CX to act as an inducer of beta-lactamases has been reported previously (4,10,12,20,25), its superiority over similar drugs as an inducer and the enhanced activity of the induced enzyme for CM has not been reported. This phenomenon resembles methicillin induction of penicillinase in Staphy- (5,14,18).…”
