Betaine supplementation enhances anabolic endocrine and Akt signaling in response to acute bouts of exercise

Abstract: Our aim was to examine the effect of betaine supplementation on selected circulating hormonal measures and Akt muscle signaling proteins after an acute exercise session. Twelve trained men (age 19.7 ± 1.23 years) underwent 2 weeks of supplementation with either betaine (B) (1.25 g BID) or placebo (P). Following a 2-week washout period, subjects underwent supplementation with the other treatment (B or P). Before and after each 2-week period, subjects performed an acute exercise session (AES). Circulating GH, IG… Show more

“…These results may be attributed to the methyl donor function of betaine, which is involved in protein and energy metabolism (Ratriyanto et al, 2009a). The higher albumen weight when betaine was supplemented suggests an increase in protein synthesis, was in agreement with previous studies showing that betaine supplementation improved protein synthesis (Apicella et al, 2013), which increased albumen weight (Joseph et al, 2000). Moreover, the 4.26 and 5.18% increases in eggshell weight determined with the supplementation of 0.06 and 0.12% betaine, respectively, may be due the higher availability of minerals for eggshell formation, which is related to improved CA digestibility.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that supplementation of betaine resulted in a significant decrease in amount of this hormone in organism of trained men relative to control group. Further increase in the amount of growth hormone and IGF-1 was found, indicating improved anabolic profile of patients [78].…”

“…Own elaboration based on [69,70] Consumption of caffeine before a workout leads to a dose-dependent increase in both cortisol (K) and testosterone (T) concentrations. Supplementation with caffeine before workout can improve the T/K ratio, regardless of the duration of the night's rest [76][77][78][79][80].…”

“…The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) and PI3K/AKT are reported to act as the downstream signals of IGF2 to regulate cell survival [13]. ERK1/2 is involved in mediating the stimulatory effect of IGF2 on hippocampal development in rats prenatally supplemented with choline [14], while AKT signaling is activated by betaine supplementation in human muscle [15]. IGF2 is regarded as a neuroprotective or neurotrophic factor because it has the ability to stimulate the proliferation of neuronal and glial cells and to increase the survival of various types of neurons [16][17][18].…”
