Betta hendra - a new species of fighting fish (Teleostei: Osphronemidae) from Kalimantan Tengah (Borneo, Indonesia)

Abstract: Betta hendra spec. nov. is described from Kalimantan Tengah, Borneo, Indonesia. It is a bubble-nesting fighting fish of the B. coccina species group. The new species differs from the other members of the group by a bright greenish iridescent colour on the flanks and unpaired fins. It is distinguished from its geographical neighbour species B. uberis by a lower number of dorsal-fin rays (10–12 versus 14–17).

“…n. is a new species and not a hybrid is supported by the results from DNA barcoding using a mitochondrial gene (cytochrome c oxidase I or COI) and a the nuclear gene (internal transcribed spacer 1 or ferent from B. splendens. As an important step toward distinguishing the black imbellis fish from the others, our extensive survey covering all eastern provinces of Thailand (including those on the Thai border shared also noticed the distinct characters of this fish, including teeRaWat utapong (personal communication) who has remarked that the fish from Kabin Buri district (Prachin Buri province) could possibly be quite dif- addition to the bubble-nest builders above, the mouthbrooder in eastern Thailand, B. prima (KotteLat, 1994) and the southern brooder B. pallida (SchindLeR & Schmidt, 2004) in the southern peninsula also share similar characters. It is thus plausible that B. siamori entalis sp.…”

“…However, pre‐Pleistocene geological activities are more likely to have shaped the modern diversity of Betta than recent island vicariance (Sholihah, Delrieu‐Trottin, Sukmono, et al., 2021). This complicated geological history may explain why there is conspicuously higher diversity of Betta in areas of insular Sundaland that include Java, Borneo, and Sumatra than on mainland Sundaland or the Indo‐Burma region (Kowasupat et al., 2012; Schindler & Schmidt, 2009).…”
