Inter-AS outbound traffic engineering (TE) is a set of techniques for controlling inter-AS traffic exiting an autonomous system (AS) by assigning the traffic to the best egress points (i.e. routers or links) from which the traffic is forwarded to adjacent ASes towards the destinations. In practice, changing network conditions such as inter-AS traffic demand variation, link failures and inter-AS routing changes occur dynamically. These changes can make fixed outbound TE solutions inadequate and may subsequently cause inter-AS links to become congested. In order to overcome this problem, we propose the deployment of a closed loop control traffic engineering system that makes outbound traffic robust to inter-AS link failures and adaptive to changing network conditions. The objective is to keep the inter-AS link utilization balanced under unexpected events while reducing service disruption and reconfiguration overheads. Our evaluation results show that the proposed system can successfully achieve better load balancing with less service disruption and re-configuration overhead in comparison to alternative approaches.

Abstract. Due to the way BGP paths are distributed over iBGP sessions inside an Autonomous System (AS), a BGP withdraw that follows a failure may be propagated outside the AS although other routers of the AS know a valid alternate path. This causes transient losses of connectivity and contributes to the propagation of a large number of unnecessary BGP messages. In this paper, we show, based on RouteViews data, that a significant number of BGP withdraws are propagated even though alternate paths exists in another border router of the same AS. We propose an incrementally deployable solution based on BGP communities that allows the BGP routers of an AS to suspend the propagation of BGP withdraws when an alternate path is available at the borders of their AS.

Abstract-This paper develops and studies a traffic-aware inter-domain routing (TIDR) protocol, which drastically improves the stability of the BGP-based inter-domain routing system. TIDR is designed based on two important Internet properties-the Internet access non-uniformity and the prevalence of transient failures. In TIDR, a network prefix is classified at an AS as either significant or insignificant from the viewpoint of a neighboring AS, depending on the amount of traffic exchanged between the prefix and the neighbor (including transit traffic). While BGP updates of significant prefixes are propagated with a higher priority, the propagation of updates of insignificant prefixes is aggressively slowed down. In particular, TIDR tries to localize the effect of transient failures on insignificant prefixes instead of propagating it onto the whole Internet. Importantly, TIDR will not create traffic black-holes due to the localization of transient failures. In this paper we present the design of TIDR and perform simulation experiments to study the performance of TIDR. Our simulation results show that TIDR can greatly improve the stability of BGP and also outperforms other existing schemes including Ghost Flushing and EPIC.
