Bi2O3, BiVO4, and Bi2WO6: Impact of Surface Properties on Photocatalytic Activity under Visible Light

Abstract: ARTICLEa basic function to increase the strength of the interaction photocatalyst-pollutant. On the basis of the discussed theoretical considerations, the origin of the high acidity of Bi 2 WO 6 was attributed to the presence of specific sites located onto the lateral faces of platelets. Future work has to focus to control the morphology of platelets to increase the proportion of lateral faces.' ASSOCIATED CONTENT b S Supporting Information. For more details about MU-SIC calculations, the affinity constants an… Show more

“…The OER activity is also improved on monodoped rutile TiO 2 (110) surface that is consistent with the recent theoretical predication based on density-functional theory calculations. 39 Previous experimental studies also suggest that the monodoping can induce high surface acidity and increase of reactant adsorption, 40,41 enhancing the charge transfer process. Finally, though the codoped TiO 2 : (W, C) NWs improves the charge transfer efficiency approximately by 10%, the improvement is not large enough to explain its 2.4 times higher saturation photocurrent density value.…”

“…If the degradationr ate constant for this process exceeds the desorption rate constant substantially,i ntermediates do not accumulate in solution.T herefore, it cannot be concluded that RhB is decomposed solely by the degradationo ft he conjugated chromophoric system, as was concluded recently for m-BiVO 4 ,b ya nalysis of the UV/Vis spectra duringt he degradation process. [43] To get am ore detailed picture, the following experiments were performed. RhB was adsorbed on the surface of BiVO 4 -3 to investigate the visible-light-driven dye decomposition directly at the surface of the photocatalyst particles.…”

“…Previous FT-IR analysis and amines absorption test carried out on BiVO4 samples revealed the presence of Lewis acid sites on its surface, 49 that are supposed to be the main anchoring moiety during the functionalization of the semiconductor. In the case of the simple core-unsubstituted NDI (dye 1), which contains two pyridine moieties, it is possible that this kind of linker established a stronger interaction with the BiVO4 surface by means of the two exposed aromatic nitrogen atoms.…”
