Biaxial tension–tension fatigue crack growth behavior of 2024-T3 under ambient air and salt water environments

Combined cyclic tension and internal pressure tests with various proportions of each loading were run on a 2.5%Cr-1%Mo steel in air and in 3.5% NaCl solution, with and without cathodic protection to investigate the effect of positive stress biaxiality on corrosion-fatigue lives and damage mechanisms. At free potential, a strong reduction in fatigue resistance was observed for uniaxial as well as for equibiaxial cyclic tension and attributed to multiple crack initiation from corrosion pits. Cathodic protection completely cancelled the detrimental effect of the corrosive environment on fatigue lives whatever the load biaxiality was, in spite of an obvious enhancement of intergranular fracture attributed to hydrogen embrittlement.

The effect of mean stress and stress biaxiality in high‐cycle fatigue

This article presents a review of selected multiaxial high‐cycle fatigue criteria with an emphasis on their ability to take into account the mean stress effect and the effect of a biaxial stress state. It is shown that the predictions of the various criteria are very different for the case of biaxial tensile loads. This is in contrast to the case of combined tension‐torsion loads, where the predictions are very similar. The second part of the article investigates which mechanical parameter (eg, the hydrostatic stress or the normal stress) is the most appropriate to take into account these cyclic stress states.

Tension‐compression fatigue behaviour of a high‐strength steel, coated with cadmium and zinc‐nickel, with dent damage was investigated under saltwater environment. Dent damage exposed coated high‐strength steel substrate to saltwater environment to study hydrogen reembrittlement. Three types of specimens were tested: cadmium and zinc‐nickel‐coated specimens with dent damage and uncoated specimens with similar dent damage that were shot‐peened in a similar way as the coated specimens. The environmentally friendly zinc‐nickel‐coated specimens displayed similar fatigue behaviour like hazardous cadmium‐coated specimens. Scanning electron microscopy with an apparatus Quanta 450 confirmed that damage mechanisms were similar in all 3 types of specimens.
