BiCl3‐catalyzed carbon‒carbon cross‐coupling of organoboronic acids with aryl iodides

Abstract: A procedure for BiCl 3 -catalyzed carbon-carbon cross-coupling reaction of organoboronic acids with aryl iodides is described. This protocol has a wide substrate scope and uses an inexpensive and non-toxic catalyst.

“…Various reaction parameters such as effect of temperature, amount of catalyst, and reaction time were determined. The products were characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, and the results are listed in the Supporting Information (shown in Figures S7–S11), which were in good agreement with those reported in the literature . The yields of the products obtained under optimized reaction conditions are included in Table .…”

“…Furthermore, compared with the bulk BiI 3 powder, the yields of the products catalyzed by BiI 3 nanosheets were doubled and the reaction time was shortened by one-third. Meanwhile, the yield of biphenyl catalyzed by few-layer BiI 3 nanosheets prepared in this work was 91%, which is higher than the highest value (80%) reported in the literature (catalyzed by BiCl 3 in dimethyl sulfoxide) . The superior catalytic activity of BiI 3 nanosheets was ascribed to more exposed active sites and the higher Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of the few-layer nanosheets, where the BET surface area of BiI 3 nanosheets and BiI 3 bulk were 6.6 and 2.2 m 2 /g, respectively, as shown in Figure S12.…”
