Bidirectional OFDM-WDM-PON System Employing 16-QAM Intensity Modulated OFDM Downstream and OOK Modulated Upstream

Abstract: Abstract-We have investigated an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) passive optical network (PON) with centralized lightwave and direct detection. The system was demonstrated for 10 Gbps 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) intensity-modulated OFDM downstream signals and 2.5 Gbps On-off keying (OOK) upstream signals respectively. A wavelength-reuse scheme is employed to carry the upstream data by using a mach-zehnder modulator (MZM) as an intensity m… Show more

“…According to previous researches, 16-QAM OFDM wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) passive optical network (PON) and direct detection were simulated for downstream data rate of 10 Gbps, upstream data rate of 2.5 Gbps and propagation length of 70 km [16]. Performances of both CO-OFDM and long-haul 100-Gb/s DDO-OFDM [17] WDM systems were compared by simulation.…”

“…Spectrally e cient modulation techniques such as M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) can be employed for IM/DD optical OFDM systems to increase both the capacity and e ciency of these systems. Recently, IM/DD optical OFDM systems have been investigated as a cost-effective solution for PONs [8][9][10][11][12][13]. A bidirectional WDM-PON system employing RSOA was demonstrated in [14],…”
