BiFeO3-Based Relaxor Ferroelectrics for Energy Storage: Progress and Prospects

Abstract: Dielectric capacitors have been widely studied because their electrostatic storage capacity is enormous, and they can deliver the stored energy in a very short time. Relaxor ferroelectrics-based dielectric capacitors have gained tremendous importance for the efficient storage of electrical energy. Relaxor ferroelectrics possess low dielectric loss, low remanent polarization, high saturation polarization, and high breakdown strength, which are the main parameters for energy storage. This article focuses on a ti… Show more

“…7,9–15 The BF–BT binary system exhibits a temperature-dependent morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) that permits composition-driven structural transition resulting in improved energy storage properties. 1 The substantial polarization of P max > 40 μC cm −2 , moderate remanent polarizations ( P r ), and moderate E b were reported at the MPB in Nd-doped BF–BT ceramics. 16 The addition of 3 mol% Nb 2 O 5 in 0.65BF–0.35BT reduced P r from ∼40 μC cm −2 to 5.33 μC cm −2 .…”

“…Therefore, dielectric capacitors have been utilized in various electronics, such as medical and research devices. 1 The energy-storing capability (ESC) of a dielectric capacitor is characterized by high power density, but relatively low recoverable energy density (W rec ). Thus, the development of dielectric capacitors has prompted great interest in enhancing W rec .…”

“…Bismuth ferrite, one of few type-I multiferroics, is a unique model object for fundamental studies on structure-dependent magnetic and polar orderings and their interrelations [1]. In addition to the evident possibilities of practical applications of BiFeO 3 as multiferroic material in magnetic field sensors, electrically switchable magnets, magnetic memory and spin electronic devices [2], new areas of applications such as photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and electric energy storage [3][4][5] were recently demonstrated. However, in the overwhelming majority of cases, practical application of BiFeO 3 requires chemical modifications, which are generally needed to overcome the drawbacks intrinsic to this compound, namely high values of both the N eel temperature and the Curie point, the modulated spin ordering that averages the net magnetization to zero and very high electroconductivity [1,6,7].…”

“…Nano-scaled processing of perovskite ferroelectrics as thin films, including BiFeO 3 , (Ba,Sr)TiO 3 , Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 , is a prevailing method to enhance the performance due to the breakdown strength of dielectrics could exponentially increase with decreasing ceramic thickness. [10][11][12][13] Therefore, synthesizing thin films with larger volume is the main aim for the aspect. At present, the size of the devices has been reduced to few micrometer-size and approaches the limit of perovskite system.…”
