“…According to the spatial sensitivity distributions of both electrostatic sensor arrays 1 and 2, the electrostatic signals from sensor array 1 contain information about the particles over the whole pipe cross section, while those from sensor array 2 contain information about the particle flow near the pipe walls [6]. In order to obtain an in-depth understanding of the particle flow dynamics over the pipe cross section, the relative concentration and velocity profiles of particle flow are obtained using the biharmonic spline interpolation method [26,27] other than a simple combination of the particle parameters measured in each of the nine zones [5]. Biharmonic spline interpolation, also known as biharmonic spline filtering, is a solution to the biharmonic equation based on the Green's function [26][27][28], which is initially developed to solve elasticity problems, such as calculate the elastic force distribution of a curved stretchable surface based on the mean elastic forces of several discrete small areas.…”

“…The biharmonic spline surface interpolation was first proposed by Sandwell DT in 1987 [19], and then investigated by many other scholars [20][21][22]. The interpolation takes on the overall smoothness and good local performance [19].…”

“…The technique of least squares has been widely used in many fields: statistics [14], image processing [15] and physics [16,17], and so on [18]. Biharmonic spline surface has been used in some fields, such as marine satellite measurement data [19], integration of logging and seismic data [20], image deformation [21], to name a few [22]. To our knowledge, few researches published the integrated approach with least squares and biharmonic spline surface in correcting distorted X-ray images.…”
