BIM and Cost Estimating: A Change in the Process for Determining Project Costs

Abstract: Using BIM for the cost estimating process is evolving and the cost estimator's responsibilities are changing. As a result of these changes professional estimators from industry organizations have dedicated time to be actively involved in advancing the state of estimating in BIM. This chapter discusses the cost estimating process in detail and compares the traditional methods with BIM methods. The chapter also provides an overview of the constraints, variables, and opportunities for the BIM cost estimating proc… Show more

“…The benefits of BIM classified according to three different applications in the construction industry. The first is Building Design, BIM, provides a comprehensive approach for evaluating design options [34], utilizing BIM in the early stages of the project life cycle for understanding the scope of work [35]. The second is building construction, BIM, allows all parties from different disciplines to updating and tracking the project documentation by utilizing a traceable and effective methodology [36].…”

“…Researchers have mentioned that the differences in the extraction quantity are due to the modeling and detail composition of the objects [13] (Monteiro & Poças Martins, 2013), and concern that variations in the amounts extracted from BIM could affect the accuracy of estimating construction costs (BoQ) From these problems it can be stated that this research is the first to be conducted regarding the increase in cost performance based on BIM Quantity Take-Off on hospital building structures. Poor knowledge about the benefits of BIM, resistance to change, poor training, and education all these are important barriers facing BIM use [14]. One of the key benefits of BIM is the accurate geometrical representation of building within an integrated information environment [15].…”

“…Therefore, codifying these practices enables them to be teachable, repeatable, and scalable. This is analogous to how McCuen (2015) identified the AACE uses of Stochastic and Deterministic methods to define quantity takeoff strategies at various stages of design.…”
