BIM for existing facilities: feasibility of spectral image integration to 3D point cloud data

Abstract: Abstract. Accurate geometrical and spatial information of the built environment can be accurately acquired and the resulting 3D point cloud data is required to be processed to construct the digital model, Building Information Modelling (BIM) for existing facilities. Point cloud by laser scanning over the buildings and facilities has been commonly used, but the data requires external information so that any objects and materials can be correctly identified and classified. A number of advanced data processing me… Show more

“…For the experiments, the wall geometry produced by the presented automated procedure is compared to the 2D-3D-S mesh geometry which serve as ground truth. Additionally, the walls of each area (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6) are manually modeled to the best of our abilities based on the clusters within Revit to evaluate the number of walls and connections that are established. Finally, Areas 1+6 and 2+4 are combined and processed together to evaluate the multi-storey capabilities of the method.…”

“…These models are vital for the reduction of failure costs during project execution and also serve as a reference for project planning and renovations. BIM is also frequently used for managing assets and is the basis for numerous analyses of existing buildings [1,2]. The creation of an as-built BIM is achieved by adjusting the objects of an existing model or by creating new objects based on observations of the building [3].…”
