Abstract. Biochar has been widely used for the in-situ remediation in the cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil, while the high-cost of biochar limited its application in farmland. In this study, we firstly investigated the possibility of cooperative application of oyster shell and biochar to enhance Cd immobilization efficiency and reduce the cost in field experiments under rice-oilseed rape rotation. Treatments were comprised of: rice planting without amendments (R-PA0); followed with 15000 kg/ha biochar (R-PA1); followed with 15000 kg/ha oyster shell (R-PA2); followed with 7500 kg/ha biochar and 7500 kg/ha oyster shell (R-PA3); rice-oilseed rape rotation without amendments (RT-PA0); rotation with 15000 kg/ha biochar (RT-PA1); rotation with 15000 kg/ha oyster shell (RT-PA2); rotation with 7500 kg/ha biochar and 7500 kg/ha oyster shell (RT-PA3). Results revealed that HOAc-extractable Cd was significantly decreased by 38.46 % in R-PA2. Cd contents in brown rice and oilseed were reduced by 29.67 % in R-PA3 and 19.74 % in RT-PA3 compared with control. Meanwhile, Hazard Quotient of brown rice and oilseed significantly decreased in RT-PA3. The Olsen-P in R-PA3 and RT-PA3 was markedly increased by 187.46 % and 184.73 %, respectively. In addition, activities of urease, catalase, and β-galactosidase in RT-PA3 were significantly increased by 268.88 %, 30.44 % and 245.28 %, respectively. Furthermore, the jiont application of biochar with oyster shell significantly decreased the cost of soil remediation at least 9600 RMB/ha. These results demonstrated that the joint utilization of biochar with oyster shell might be an economical and effective pathway to achieve in-situ remediation of Cd contaminated farmland.

Pollution-Induced Food Safety Problem in China: Trends and Policies

Based on systematic literature study and policy document analysis, this paper investigates the environmental pollution-induced food safety problem in China, including the impact of environmental pollution on food safety and the policy response of Chinese government since 1970's. The results show that, to different degrees, food safety of China is affected by large but inefficient chemical fertilizer and pesticides residue (although the consumption began to decline after around 2015), cropland heavy metal pollution (especially cadmium), water pollution, and high ozone concentration. The evolution of pollution-induced food safety policies of China can be divided into four stages, i.e., preparation stage (1974–1994), construction stage (1995–2005), elaboration stage (2006–2013), and intensification stage (2014–). Through the four stages, the increasingly stringent policy system has been featured by “from supply-safety balance to safety first,” “from multi-agency management to integrated management,” and “from ex post supervision to ex ante risk control.” To further prevent pollution and control food quality, more collaborations between the agricultural and environmental agencies and more specific policies should be anticipated.

A human bio monitoring study, investigating most consumed fish species exposure to heavy metals was done in northern part of Iran, Miankale Peninsula, in winter 2019. Metals levels were evaluated in various tissues of fish, as well as Turkmen pregnant women’s biological indicators. For this purpose, 20 water and sediment, 14 fish and 16 human samples were collected. Concentration of Cr, Co, Cu, As, Hg and Pb metals were determined by ICP-MS device. The highest mean concentration of Cu and Cr in water (93.35 and 80.91 µg/l respectively), Hg and Pb in sediment (7.4 µg/g for both), Cu and Pb in liver (27 and18.9 µg/g for C.carpio; 1414 and 31.7 µg/g for L.auratus), muscle (10 and 18.8 for C.carpio; 37.2 and 8.27 µg/g for L.auratus), and skin (26.4 and 9.9 for C.carpio; 10.8 and 11.74 µg/g for L.auratus) of both fish species, and Cu in blood (2.53 mg/l), hair (8.87 µg/g), fingernail (36.46 µg/g), and toenail (29.04 µg/g) samples were observed, while Co had the lowest concentration in all samples. Liver in fish samples and fingernail in pregnant women were the tissues with the highest heavy metals accumulation, whereas the lowest concentrations of heavy metals were observed in the muscles of fish species and pregnant women’s blood sample. Hg concentration in water and sediments, the muscle of fish, and pregnant women’s blood and hair samples were higher than the values suggested by various organizations. This study showed that the level of heavy metals, especially Hg, in water, sediments and fish is a threat to human health. Therefore, it is recommended that the necessary information about the consumption of seafood with high amounts of Hg should be provided in this area.
