Bioactive compounds and fruit quality traits of Granny Smith Challenger apple grown under varying shade levels of green protective shade nets

Abstract: The aim of the study is to assess the yield, fruit quality, phenolic compounds, and organic acids of the Granny Smith Challenger apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) grown under protective shade nets. In the study, control (unnetted, T1), shade nets with 15% weave (T2), 20% weave (T3), 35% weave (T4), and 55% weave (T5) were selected as treatments. In both years of the study, yield and % marketable fruit increased significantly as overall % weave resulted in shading increases. The effect of 35% weave on yield and … Show more

“…During the last decades, there have been extensive studies on various aspects related to fruit quality ( Musacchi and Serra, 2018 ; Zhu et al., 2018 ; Quinet et al., 2019 ; Ozturk et al., 2020 ; Liao et al., 2021 ; Mao et al., 2022 ; Ozturk et al., 2022 ; Pott et al., 2023 ). To provide better guidance for both basic and applied research, a systematic analysis of these studies based on extensive literature collection is urgently needed.…”

“…Apples are rich in bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, organic acids, phenolic substances and vitamins (Kuşçu and Bulantekin, 2016;Ozturk et al, 2022). Many cultivars are used in apple cultivation in the world, and 'Starking Delicious' and 'Golden Delicious' cultivars are among the widely cultivated cultivars in Türkiye (Mordoğan and Ergun, 2002).…”
