Bioaerosol concentration in the air surrounding municipal solid waste landfill

Abstract: The research was focused on the assessment of the bioaerosol concentration in the air of the Machnacz municipal solid waste landfill and its surrounding. Evaluation of air pollution was made during the autumn season. In the air collected with impactor sampler, the levels of indicator microorganisms-bacteria from the Enterobacteriaceae family, β-haemolytic bacteria, yeasts and yeast-like fungi-were determined. The proposed indicator microorganisms are different from those recommended by Polish Norm PN 89/Z-0411… Show more

“…On the above described observations certain influence may also have the distance from the landfill (Kaarakainen et al 2008;Kaźmierczuk and Bojanowicz-Bablok 2014;Schlosser et al 2016). In this study, the species pattern analysis covering all sampling sites during the landfill exploitation showed two major clusters grouping these places according to the distance from the active site (S3) (Fig.…”

“…Only the LIMIC context was considered in the risk assessment for the bioaerosols because the risk was considered to be comparatively trivial for formal workers in HICs where they have little close interaction with the waste. (Frederickson et al, 2013) guidelines, which decrease with distance from the source (Akpeimeh et al, 2019;Breza-Boruta, 2012;Buczyńska et al, 2006;Burkowska et al, 2011;Cyprowski et al, 2019;Kaźmierczuk and Bojanowicz-Bablok, 2014;Lis et al, 2004;Mansour, 2012).  Personal air sampling concentrations (Akpeimeh et al, 2019;Cyprowski et al, 2019) were extremely high in comparison to static samplers, particularly for waste pickers who it is suggested suffer greater exposure due to proximity to mechanical waste handling activities (Akpeimeh et al, 2019).…”

“…The number of Escherichia coli bacteria ranged 0 to 24 CFU/m 3 . Epidemiological studies on the Enterobacteriaceae family in the air show that the highest concentrations of these bacteria were in wastewater treatments and on municipal waste landfills [31,32]. Identified bacteria occurring on the premises and in the vicinity of the municipal waste landfill site in different countries are comparable (Table 4).…”
