Biocellulose Membranes as Supports for Dermal Release of Lidocaine

Abstract: Biocellulose (BC) is a highly pure form of cellulose, produced in the form of a swollen membrane, with several applications in the biomedical area. In this study, the behavior of BC membranes as systems for topical delivery of lidocaine was evaluated. The BC-lidocaine membranes were prepared and characterized in terms of structural and morphological properties. A uniform distribution of the drug inside the BC membranes was observed. In vitro diffusion studies with Franz cells were conducted using human epiderm… Show more

“…Another critical issue regarding the use of topical semisolid formulations is the loss of material due to contact with garments or surfaces [8]. Regarding dose accuracy, for semisolids, the amount of drug used and application area are patient-dependent and therefore are not accurate and vary widely with the patient perception.…”

“…However, the function of BNC can be improved by inclusion of active substances into the biopolymer. For example, low molecular drugs like anesthetics, analgetics, and beta-blockers as well as metal ions, such as silver, or proteins are used in combination with BNC hydrogels for the preparation of drug delivery systems [10][11][12][13][14][15]. Silver in form of ions or nanoparticles is the active substance applied mainly [10,16,17].…”

“…Applications of bacterial cellulose are extensive in many industries, such as in biomedical industries, paper production, food industries, and cosmetics. In the field of biomedical industries, bacterial cellulose can be used as biosensor, biofill, transdermal drug delivery, and wound cover [9,10,11]. In paper making, bacterial cellulose is used in the production of synthetic paper, insulation materials, and surface coatings.…”
