Biochemical parameters of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) after transport with eugenol or essential oil of Lippia alba added to the water

Abstract: The transport of live fish is a routine practice in aquaculture and constitutes a considerable source of stress to the animals. The addition of anesthetic to the water used for fish transport can prevent or mitigate the deleterious effects of transport stress. This study investigated the effects of the addition of eugenol (EUG) (1.5 or 3.0 µL L -1) and essential oil of Lippia alba (EOL) (10 or 20 µL L -1 ) on metabolic parameters (glycogen, lactate and total protein levels) in liver and muscle, acetylcholinest… Show more

“…However, there has been an increasing interest to find new anaesthetics with plant origin because of their potential health benefits. In this case, essential oil of different plants ( Lippia alba , Aloysia triphylla , Cymbopogon nardus , Cunila galioides , Origanum majorana , Myrcia sylvatica and Curcuma longa ) was successfully used for anaesthesia of different fish species (Azambuja et al., ; Barbas et al., ; Cunha et al., , ; Parodi et al., ; Saccol, Londero et al., ; Saccol, Toni et al., ; Salbego et al., , ; Teixeira et al., ).…”

“…In addition, the use of EOs in water during transport is also useful in order to activate the antioxidant defense system. Silver catfish transported with the EOs of L. alba (chemotype linalool) (10 and 20 μL⋅L –1 ) and A. triphylla (30 and 40 μL⋅L –1 ) in the transport water showed improvement in the redox state (Azambuja et al, 2011; Zeppenfeld et al, 2014; Salbego et al, 2017). However, this effect is dependent on the concentrations used.…”
