Biodegradation of TOC by Nano‐Fe2O3 Modified SMFC and Its Potential Environmental Effects**

Abstract: In this paper, sediment microbial fuel cell (SMFC) with nano-Fe 2 O 3 modified anode was investigated to enhance in-situ remediation. Results showed that the modification led to higher removal of total organic matter (TOC) after 50 days. Anodic microbial community was further analyzed. It was found that the decrease of relative abundance of exoelectrogens and the suppression of methanogens led to the reduction of the power generation in SMFC with modified anode. Longilinea was one of key bacteria regarding TOC… Show more

“…decomposes hydrocarbon into acetate and H 2 [81]. Yang et al [82] reported that the presence of Fe 2 O 3 at the anode promoted the reproduction of Longilinea sp., which could release intracellular electrons through the metabolism of substrates or intermediates [83]. Bacteroides sp.…”

“…Unlike expensive precious metals, transition metal oxides have a wider range of applications in improving the overall performance of MFCs due to their low cost, good conductivity, and high capacitance. [ 103,104 ] Examples of such materials include iron oxides (Fe 3 O 4 , [ 105 ] Fe 2 O 3 , [ 106 ] and FeO [ 107 ] ), MnO 2 , [ 108 ] TiO 2 , [ 109 ] MoO 2 , [ 110 ] and RuO 2 . [ 17 ] Compared with monometallic oxides, bimetallic oxides contain metals with variable valence and have better capacitance, allowing them to temporarily store electrons released by microorganisms and enhance the cyclic stability of MFCs.…”

“…In the summer, the TOC and NO 2 − -N had positive correlations with the TVOCs (Figure 4B), and the two axes explained 81.97%. The TOC is a direct and reliable indicator that has been widely used to characterize organic pollution in water bodies and sediments [38] because of its potential hazards to humans [39], which means the VOCs are related to the river pollution in the Huangshui River. TOC can come from food waste [40] and released oils [41] and metals, such as Cu, Cr, Al, and Ni [42,43], which are related to pollution by humans.…”
