Biodiesel production using co-solvents: a review

Abstract: Biodiesel is a renewable and biodegradable biofuel, generally produced by the fatty materials transesterification. Due to its importance in the diversification of the energy matrix of countries, various studies have been carried out to improve its production process. One of the technologies developed is the use of co-solvents in the process. The co-solvents decrease the mass transfer resistance between the oil and the alcohol during the chemical reaction. In this paper, a review of the literature on the biodie… Show more

“…36 On the contrary, the co-solvents decrease the mass transfer resistance between the oil and the alcohol during the chemical reaction. 37 Maeda et al 38 proposed various kinds of co-solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), diethyl ether (DEE), acetonitrile, acetone, and isopropanol (IPA) that dissolve the related materials of transesterification to produce a homogeneous reaction system (a single phase). Using acetone and IPA co-solvent, the reaction was completed in a short time and the FAME yield was >98% at a low temperature.…”

“…Porém, para que isso aconteça, requer que a matéria-prima tenha baixos teores de AGL e água. Quando o valor AGL é elevado, pode ocorrer formação de sabão (Simonelli et al, 2019).…”
