Biodiversity and Edible Plants of Mexico

Abstract: Mexico that stands out as a megadiverse country is the fi fth nation in terms of species richness. The country is home to 25,000-30,000 species of plants and currently 7461 useful plants are registered, of which 2168 are edible according to ethnobotanical data base of Mexican useful plants (BADEPLAM). In this chapter, edible plants are divided into six subcategories and describe some of the edible species recorded across different ethnobotanical research conducted in different regions of Mexico. We conclude th… Show more

“…The genus Cucurbita (pumpkins, squashes, and gourds), with 20 taxa of perennial or annual plants, is native to the Americas. Mexico is considered its center of origin and diversification ( Lira-Saade, 1995 ; Mapes and Basurto, 2016 ). Cucurbita represents an interesting system for the study of domestication ( Lira et al, 2016b ) with five different domesticated species: C. pepo , C. moschata , C. ficifolia , C. maxima , and C. argyrosperma ( Wilson et al, 1992 ; Sanjur et al, 2002 ; Kocyan et al, 2007 ; Gong et al, 2013 ; Zheng et al, 2013 ; Kates et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Next, we grouped our findings in the following 12 categories: amphibians and reptiles; birds; fruits; fungi; insects; cereals and legumes; mammals; quelites; sea products; grains and seeds; roots and tubers; and vegetables ( Figure 6). Quelites are edible herbs, usually considered as crop weeds; they have been consumed in Mexico for more than 5,000 years, and they continue to be part of the daily diet, mostly in the rural areas (Mapes and Basurto, 2016).…”

“…It ranks fifth among the 12 megadiverse countries that host around 70% of the world's biological richness (CONABIO, 2017); and also has a great cultural diversity because of the presence of 62 ethnolinguistic groups considered indigenous (Navarrete-Linares, 2008), as well as Mestizos and Afro-descendant groups. An example of the Mexican biocultural richness is the use of 7,461 species of vascular plants (Mapes & Basurto, 2016), 32% of the 22,969 known taxa in the country reported by Ulloa-Ulloa et al (2017).…”
