Biofiltration of High Loads of Ethyl Acetate in the Presence of Toluene

Abstract: To date, biofilters have been used primarily to control dilute, usually odorous, off-gases with relatively low volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations (<1 g m -3 ) and VOC loads (<50 g m -3 hr -1 ). Recently, however, U.S. industry has shown an interest in applying biofilters to higher concentrations of VOCs and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs).In this study, the behavior of biofilters under high loads of binary VOC mixtures was studied. Two benchscale biofilters were operated using a commercially availa… Show more

“…Inhibition and/or catabolic repression have also been demonstrated to play a role in degradation of aromatic compounds when present in mixtures containing other readily degradable compounds. 8,22 Nevertheless, by the end of reactor operation, removal of all components within the length of the both biofilters was possible; the EBRT of 59 sec was sufficient for consistent VOC degradation.…”

“…Yet, industrial users and vendors of BFs have been attracted by the concept of treating higher concentrations and operating at higher loading rates of VOCs in BFs. 16 In this way, the application area of biofiltration could be expanded from odor removal to the sanitation of specific, more-concentrated air streams originating from a variety of industries. In Europe, the recently issued European Solvent Emissions Directive (1999/13/EC) will be an additional motivation for an increased implementation of the more economical biotechnologies for cleaning polluted waste gases.…”

“…[1][2][3] However, the absence of a free liquid makes it sometimes difficult to control key environmental parameters such as pH and moisture content. [4][5][6][7] Bioscrubbers are reactors in which a pollutant-containing waste airstream is contacted with a scrubbing solution. The most promising bioscrubber setup is the biotrickling filter, in which absorption and biodegradation of the pollutants is achieved in a single packed bed column reactor.…”
