Bioguided isolation of compounds with antioxidant activity to improve the in vitro maturation of mammalian oocytes

Abstract: Bioactive compounds are characterized as secondary metabolites, derived from plants, that exert pharmacological and/or toxicological effects on humans and/or animals. In recent years, such compounds, particularly those exhibiting antioxidant activity, have been employed in the in vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes from different mammals. Such an application is aimed at increasing the efficiency of in vitro embryo production by reducing the oxidative stress caused by in vitro conditions. This review obje… Show more

“…Oocyte maturation induction depends on the successful conclusion and integration of a number of important processes related to both the nuclear and cytoplasmic components of maturation (Moor et al,1998). Meiotic development to metaphase II (MII) can be accelerated using luteinizing hormones, which improved the original in vitro maturation procedure (de Oliveira et al 2020).…”

“…Therefore, different approaches to the optimisation of the IVEP stages have been employed. The first strategy of the in vitro maturation was improved through stimulation by luteinising hormones, to stimulate their meiotic progression to metaphase II (MII) (de Oliveira Santos et al 2018;de Oliveira et al 2020).…”

“…However, oocyte competence does not depend only on intrinsic factors, but is also related to the type of protocol used in the laboratory, the semen, and method of obtaining oocytes Research, Society and Development, v. 10, n. 2, e16110212264, 2021 (CC BY 4.0) | ISSN 2525-3409 | DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.33448/rsd-v10i2.12264 (Merton et al, 2003). Several authors have emphasized the improvement of oocyte quality in the supplementation of oocytes with antioxidant substances, to reduce oxidative stress (Oliveira et al, 2020).…”
