To maintain the high yields and fruit quality necessary for profitability of sweet cherry production, it is important to consider precision crop load and canopy management techniques during limb renewal. The effects of branch section age, rootstock, and cultivar on spur and flower density and fruit quality have been discussed in previous studies, but most of them focus on a limited range of fruiting wood ages and scion-rootstock combinations. This study aims to analyse the processes of sweet cherry productivity and fruit size formation on a wide range of wood age to determine the limit after which branch preservation is not sustainable, and to evaluate the influence of rootstocks and cultivars on these parameters. The results indicate that wood age is one of the main drivers of productivity formation in cherry. The highest flower density was observed on 3-year-old branch sections – 324 flowers per linear m, due to high spur density, number of reproductive buds per spur and flowers per bud. Productivity on 2-year-old wood was also good (256 flowers per linear m), while a sharp decline in flower density was noted on 4- and 5-year-old wood. The largest fruits were formed on young branch sections, with a significant decline in fruit weight and diameter on 4- and 5-year-old sections. Rootstock vigour had a bigger effect on floral organ induction on 1-year-old shoots, than on spurs. Based on the results, it is advisable to regularly renew lateral branches older than 3 years to maintain high yield efficiency and fruit quality.

Background. The increase in fruit production to a deficit-free volume of consumption by the population and the needs of industrial processing is due to the need to expand the area of garden plantings. An integral part of the organization of the laying of garden plantings is the nursery industry that grows planting material. A lot depends on the quality of the planting material. The choice of a seedling affects the further growth, development, fruiting, yield and immunity of the future fruit tree. In the conditions of a nursery of stone crops of open ground, it is important to determine the irrigation regime, which, in combination with the use of fertilizers, will provide the highest yield of seedlings while saving all types of resources. Purpose. To determine the economic efficiency indicators of the recommended irrigation technology in combination with mineral fertilizing of cherry seedlings. The assessment of economic efficiency in our experiments was carried out by calculating the profit received, taking into account all costs in the nursery and the level of profitability. Materials and methods. The object of research was annual cherry seedlings of the Vasilisa variety. The scheme of two-factor experience provided for the study of three options for each factor. Factor A is the water regime of the soil and factor B is mineral fertilizing. Results. It has been proved that when growing seedlings of stone crops on light chestnut soils, the effectiveness of fertilizer application in combination with a differentiated irrigation method is high, in which the depth of soaking and, accordingly, the irrigation rate changes. Conclusion. The analysis of the data on the economic efficiency of growing seedlings showed that at the selling price of seedlings 170 (grade 1) and 120 (grade 2) rubles per seedling, when growing them against the background of the A3 water regime in combination with top dressing with Izabion and Master, the profitability was the highest and amounted to 155 and 154%. At the same time, the profitability of the control variant was 99%.

On the basis of its biological characteristics, sweet cherry belongs to warm-season crops. Introduced most recently in the more northern areas (Central Black Earth and Central regions), it is in demand by the population as a new fruit crop. In 2010, 44 forms were selected from the seedlings of the Bryanskaya Rosovaya variety (free pollination). In this work, the most adaptable, yielding, large-fruited seedlings producing a fruit having a small seed were selected for breeding and economic use. The research was carried out in the experimental plot of the orchard at the All-Russian Lupine Research Institute in Bryansk region in 2019–2021. Light grey forest soil was used; pHKCl 5.9; humus – 2.37 mg/kg, P2 O5 – 251 mg/kg of soil, K2O – 181 mg/kg of soil. The heat summation by years amounted to 2020–2460 °C. The annual precipitation amounted to 436–714 mm. Subjected to contrasting weather conditions, varieties combining a high level of economic traits in their genome and having an attractive marketable appearance were selected. The seedlings 6-2-8, 6-2-5, 6-2-3, 6-1-20 demonstrated the highest yield of 5.9–14.5 t/ha. From year to year, the variation of this trait was less than 10%. The seedlings 6-2-27 (the maximum mass of the fruit amounted to 8,1 g; the size of the seed amounted to 4.2 % of a fruit size), 6-2-8 (8.5 g; 4.8 %), 6-1-20 (8.5 g; 4.6 %), 6-1-8 (7.8 g; 4.9 %), 6-2-14 (7.9 g; 5.4 %), 6-2-22 (8.7 g; 5.5 %) represent the largest varieties, having small seeds. For these traits, the noted varieties showed a medium to high level of variability of 7–17 %. In the future, they will be used in breeding as sources of economic traits.
