Biological Treatment of Petrochemical Wastewater

Abstract: Petrochemical wastewater is inherent to oil industries. The wastewater contains various organic and inorganic components that need to be well managed before they can be discharged to any receiving waters. The complexity of the wastewater and stringent discharge limit push the development of wastewater treatment by combinations of different methods. Biological wastewater treatments that have been well developed for organic and inorganic wastewater treatment are thus a potential method for petrochemical wastewat… Show more

“…A full-scale application of continuous flow intermittent cleaning (CFIC) biofilm technology based on the MBBR concept was performed recently in the Biowater Technology AS in Norway to treat petrochemical wastewater of fluctuating concentrations with the COD ranging from 7 to 35 g/L [7]. The CFIC reactor contained highly packed polymer biofilm carriers (over 90% filling ratio) was operated continuously at the flow rate of 240 m 3 /day, resulting in over 90% COD removal.…”

“…The complexity of the wastewater composition and stringent discharge limits require combinations of several treatment methods. There are several reviews published recently on the treatment of petrochemical wastewater [3][4][5] including biological methods [6,7]. This review focuses on advanced bioreactor technologies, including hybrid and integrated physico-chemical and biological systems.…”

“…The CFIC process operates in two modes, a normal operation where high carrier filling is applied and a washing mode for extra sludge removal (Figure 6). Detailed process concept description can be referred to [34], and more information is given in the following presentation of a three-stage CFIC pilot for municipal organic and nitrogen removal. The first full-scale three-stage CFIC process has also been accomplished for a 30,000 m 3…”
