Biomarkers of lung‐related diseases: Current knowledge by proteomic approaches

Abstract: The lung epithelial surface is one of the vital barriers or sensors in the body responding to the external atmosphere and thereby always subjecting to direct toxicological exposure, stress, stimulus, or infection. Due to its relatively higher sensitivity in response to toxicants, the use of lung epithelial cell culture and lung tissue from animal models or patients has facilitated our learning to lung physiopathology and toxicopharmacology. The recent advancement of proteomics has made it possible to investiga… Show more

“…In recent years, there is a great increase in genomics and other molecular research which produced a tremendous amount of information related to molecular biology [1][2][3]. Meantime, various powerful data mining and statistical bioinformatics methods have been propagated for identifying, prioritizing and classifying robust and generalizable biomarkers with high discriminatory ability [4], and some online bioinformatics data libraries, such as Enzyme, KEGG, Gene Ontology, NCBI Taxonomy, SwissProt and TrEMBL were generated for the store and management of data.…”

“…Proteomic analysis is one of the most widely used techniques for defining functional proteins and crosstalk between proteins and DNA (6)(7)(8). Furthermore, proteomics is a powerful research tool for the identification of biomarkers and therapeutic targets for toxicology, pharmacology, cancer biology, and other biomedical research (8).…”

“…Other factors which affect the feasibility of regular BAL use include the considerable time, expertise and cost to perform the procedure [30]. Some of these challenges may be overcome through the utilisation and development of state of the art technologies that can evaluate biomarkers in very small volumes of sample [31][32][33][34]. Less invasive means of sampling airway surface liquid are needed for regular routine use.…”
