Biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation in people witha physical disability treated with a standardized extract ofNasturtium officinale: A randomized, double‐blind, and placebo‐controlled trial

Abstract: It is well established that plants from the Brassicaceae family, particularly watercress, have been associated to reduce oxidative DNA damage. Nasturtium officinale R. Br (watercress) contains glucosinolates, with anti-inflammatory action and protective effect on human health against oxidative stress. We aimed to evaluate whether the standardized extract of Nasturtium officinale (SENO) is capable of changing biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation in people with physical disabilities. 65 people enrolle… Show more

“…Our findings support that orientin has multiple therapeutic effects, such as antioxidant, antiaging, antiviral, antiinflammation, antiadipogenesis, cardioprotective, radioprotective, and neuroprotective [5]. Although orientin was water-soluble [74], pharmacokinetic studies have proven that orientin can be rapidly absorbed and transported to various organs and tissues in the body, with better absorption, faster clearance, and no accumulation of poisoning [75]. Therefore, in the future research, its pharmacological action mechanism should be studied in depth, including experiments in mammal animal models of aging and aging-related diseases for the beneficial effects of orientin in view of the translation into clinics.…”

“…This may be related to the action of isothiocyanates derived from glucosinolates that accumulate in these vegetables (Armah et al, 2015). Our research shows that SENO had the positive effect of decreasing the biomarkers of oxidative stress and C‐reactive protein (CR‐P) levels in humans (Clemente et al, 2020). CR‐P is an acute inflammatory marker (Sproston & Ashworth, 2018) and has been associated with hyperlipidemia (Ma et al, 2016).…”

“…The plant material and the extraction of SENO for this study were done as described by Clemente et al (2019) in an acute and sub‐acute oral toxicity study of SENO in Wistar rats. The high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis and the chemical constituents of the fluid extract of Nasturtium officinale were already demonstrated by Clemente et al (2020). The placebo and the final extract (Hydro‐glycolic extract) with 5.0 mg/ml −1 of phenylethyl glucosinolate as the major marker (Anvisa, 2011; Carvalho, 2008) were used in the preclinical study (Clemente et al, 2019).…”
