Biomass and standing stock on sublittoral hard substrates in the Oosterschelde estuary (SW Netherlands)

Abstract: From 1979 to 1991 the species composition of communities living on hard substrata (hardsub) in the Oosterschelde has been studied -in both the littoral and sublittoral zones . From 1984 onwards, biomass was also measured . This paper deals mainly with the distribution and the development of biomass on sublittoral hardsub in the Oosterschelde . Analysis has shown that the most important abiotic factors regulating the flora and fauna are : quantity and nature of the substrate ; sedimentation ; exposure to water … Show more

“…This is also found in the total biomass (Leewis et al ., 1994) . As already stated, three executive parameters were responsible for these changes : 1) the decrease of the vertical extinction coefficient, which enabled some algae to penetrate into the aphotic zone; 2) the decrease of tidal current velocities, which enabled other species, not adapted to extreme conditions, to settle in the mouth of the estuary, the Hammen and the Zijpe ; 3) the increase of sedimentation, which prevented settlement and survival of species in certain regions .…”

“…In the Oosterschelde (The Netherlands), where Pacific oysters were introduced in the 1960s, C. gigas is now a dominant species in intertidal and subtidal benthic communities (de Kluijver and Leewis 1994;Leewis et al 1994;Meijer and Waardenburg 1994;Drinkwaard 1999). In British Columbia, C. gigas is found only in intertidal habitats, presumably because low temperatures in deeper waters limit the survival of larvae and juveniles (Quayle 1988).…”

“…Okamura 1986;Enderlein & Wahl 2004). In the North Sea the blue mussel Mytilus edulis Linnaeus, 1758 is one of the dominant species in the upper sections of hard substrates (Hardy 1981;Garcia 1991;Leewis et al 1994) including offshore sites (Wolfson et al 1979;Forteath et al 1982;Page & Hubbard 1987;Whomersley & Picken 2003;Buck 2007).…”
