Biomechanical Evaluation of the Influence of an Intramedullary Pin on the Stability of a Feline Ilial Fracture Model Stabilized With a Bone Plate

Abstract: No biomechanical advantage was demonstrated. The P + P constructs were not significantly stronger than plates alone in this acutely loaded cadaveric model.

“…Dorsal plating provides an alternative option to improve screw purchase and lower the incidence of screw loosening . However, this technique is technically demanding and may have a greater risk for iatrogenic nerve damage . Another approach for decreasing the risk of screw loosening associated with lateral plating involves the use of locking implants.…”

“…In a recent retrospective comparison of fixation methods for ilial fractures in cats, screw loosening was detected in 50% of cases treated with nonlocking plates, whereas no screw loosening occurred after locking fixation . Although some biomechanical studies evaluating fixation constructs for ilial fractures in small animals have been published, the proposed mechanical advantages of locking compared with nonlocking plate techniques remains unclear in feline ilial fractures. Double plating has been reported as a successful method of repair for comminuted ilial fractures in cats, but the biomechanics of orthogonal nonlocking plating in comminuted iliac fractures have not been evaluated.…”

“…Techniques for the repair of ilial fractures in cats include intramedullary pinning, pin and wire combination, screw and wire combination, plate and pin combination, and lateral as well as dorsal plating. Lateral plating is the most frequently reported method . A recent study evaluating cuttable plates and dynamic compression plates for lateral plating in 21 cats reported a high frequency of screw loosening (62%) and potential loss of fixation associated with more severe pelvic canal narrowing.…”
