Biophysical Aspects of Auger Processes

Abstract: In this review I begin with a brief history of Auger processes, and then present a more detailed review of recent literature reports on physical, molecular, and cellular aspects of Auger emitters, and potential therapeutic applications.

“…By HPLC one single peak was found for each compound, with retention times of 14.99 min and 10.95 min for L1 and L2, respectively. In the positive mode, the ESI-MS spectra showed prominent peaks at m/z values corresponding to the expected molecular ions: [ 3 ]Br with L1 and L2 in refluxing methanol, followed by column chromatography purification, led to the cationic tricarbonyl complexes Re1 and Re2 (Scheme 2).…”

“…[Re(H 2 O) 3 (CO) 3 ]Br was reacted overnight with equimolar amounts of L1-L2 in refluxing methanol. After this time, the solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the desired products were purified by column chromatography.…”

“…The energy transfer is sufficient to displace an atom. This radiation damage, also called knock-on or displacement damage, is used in medical treatment where controlled damage is desirable [38]. This mechanism is shown in the inset of Figure 3 as an example of an electron scattering under large angles.…”

“…A number of authors (see Hofer, 1998) discuss alternative dosimetry systems. Bingham et al (2000) refer in particular to the scheme used by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) (Howell, 1992;Sastry, 1992) which recommends a w R of 20 for all Auger emitters for stochastic effects, for the proportion bound to DNA.…”
