Abstract:The aim of the present work was to examine the effect of the application of Spirulina platensis post-extraction residues enriched with Zn(II), Mn(II), Cu(II) via biosorption as micronutrient fertilizer for the biofortification of maize grains with micronutrients in field tests. As a nominal dose 2.5 kg ha -1 of zinc, 1.0 kg ha -1 of manganese and 0.5 kg ha -1 of copper were applied. The preparation was applied also in higher doses (150%, 200%) to investigate agronomic biofortification of maize grains. In field trials, obtained grain yield (7.2 Mg ha -1 for Spirulina 100%) was higher than in control group (6.2 Mg ha -1 ) and commercial reference product (6.6 Mg ha -1 ). For the same dose of micronutrients, their bioavailability was higher for bio-preparations than for reference fertilizer. The highest content of micronutrients delivered to plants (2.15 mg kg -1 -Cu, 7.07 mg kg -1 -Mn, 29.0 mg kg -1 -Zn) was observed for maize grains fertilized with preparation of Spirulina 150%, which signifies that biofortified maize grain was obtained. Corn grains biofortified with micronutrients can be used as staple food or feed preventing from micronutrient malnutrition. The application of micronutrient biocomponents based on Spirulina biomass allows to manufacture a valuable fertilizer with bioavailable micronutrients.

The study on the influence of Arthrospira platensis extract as a corrosion inhibitor on A516 carbon steel in 0.5 M HCl solution has been conducted. The extract was obtained by the maceration method and characterized by phytochemical analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The effect of corrosion inhibition of A. platensis extract was studied by weight loss method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements and scanning electron microscopy. The dosage of A. platensis extract was varied between 100 to 250 ppm. The results of phytochemical and FTIR analysis show that the extract of A. platensis revealed the presence of saponin, steroid and alkaloid compounds, along with hydroxyl, carbonyl, amine, and carboxylic groups, which are responsible for the adsorption on the carbon steel surface. The extract of A. platensis showed good performance at a dose of 250 ppm with inhibition efficiency of 66% at 298 K. The charge transfer resistance increases from 82 •cm 2 to 246 •cm 2 in the electrochemical impedance spectrum after the addition of 250 ppm A. platensis extract. The adsorption of this extract on the surface of A516 carbon steel obeys the Langmuir isotherm. Thermodynamic parameter of adsorption allows us to suggest the adsorption process was dominated by physical adsorption. SEM analysis supported the inhibitive action of the A. platensis extract against the carbon steel corrosion in acid media.

In this literature review, the removal of heavy metals from aqueous media by an environmentally friendly method, known as biosorption has been discussed. Biosorption can be referred to as an alternative to the common unsustainable industrial methods currently used. Removal of heavy metals from aqueous media by biosorption can take place by the aid of different types of biomass including algae, fungi, bacteria and plants. The mechanism(s) of biosorption can vary accordingly, mechanisms include physical adsorption, ion exchange, complexation, precipitation and transport across the cells. The efficiency of removal of heavy metals by a specific biosorbent at specified conditions can be compared by the calculated biosorption capacity of the respected biosorbent. Several factors can influence the biosorption capacity of different biosorbents, that mainly includes water pH, temperature, contact time, biomass dosage and initial heavy metal concentration. This literature review focuses on the types of biosorbents, mechanisms of biosorption and factors affecting biosorption capacity. In addition, biosorption, as a method which has the potential of competing with common industrial methods has been critically analysed.
