Biostimulants and Herbicides: A Promising Approach towards Green Deal Implementation

Abstract: Biostimulants are products that can increase crop growth and can be applied either to the soil or to the plant and seed of a wide range of crops. However, there is a large gap in knowledge regarding the potential interactions of biostimulants with plant protection products like herbicides. The present review aims to highlight various effects of the combined use of biostimulants with herbicides in terms of weed management, crop yield and quality parameters. Special emphasis is given to the comparison between th… Show more

“…BMR effects were not always consistent in the two consecutive years considered, and these results can be explained by the different environmental conditions in the two experimental years (Supplementary Data Figures S1, S2). A similar effect has been recently reported in other species (potato, wheat, and maize) by Kanatas et al (2022). It is well known that in open field crops are exposed to multiple stress conditions and temperature and rainfall can mitigate or exacerbate the effect of biostimulants.…”

“…Besides, phytotoxic damages induced by herbicides depends on genotypic and environmental conditions (Taylor-Lovell et al, 2001;Chipomho et al, 2023). The combined application of herbicides and biostimulants may help in ameliorating plant growth and diminishing stresses eventually caused by the herbicides (Kanatas et al, 2022). Moreover, the simultaneous application of herbicides and biostimulants may be a good strategy for reducing the application costs.…”
