Biotechnology applied to fish reproduction: tools for conservation

Abstract: This review discusses the new biotechnological tools that are arising and promising for conservation and enhancement of fish production, mainly regarding the endangered and the most economically important species. Two main techniques, in particular, are available to avoid extinction of endangered fish species and to improve the production of commercial species. Germ cell transplantation technology includes a number of approaches that have been studied, such as the transplantation of embryo-to-embryo blastomere… Show more

“…Cryopreservation is a powerful method for preserving precious genetic resources as this technology requires no special and expensive equipment and is feasible as long as liquid nitrogen and cryo-containers are available. Because a cryopreservation technique for fish eggs is not yet available, a combination of cryopreservation and transplantation of germline stem cells could be extremely important for preserving the genetic resources of endangered species [details of these techniques can be found in other review articles (Yoshizaki et al 2011;Yoshizaki and Lee 2018;de Siqueira-Silva et al 2018)].…”

“…Nowadays, wide pallet of GSCs transplantation methods as well sterilization methods became available and veri ed on several sh species [11,41]. Our strategy is based on complete depletion of endogenous PGCs via dead end gene knockdown as this gene is essential for PGCs migration and maintenance and its suitability for sterilization has been documented in several sh species [42].…”

“…Reproduction using wild-specimens, followed by the rearing of juveniles, may work synergically for GenBank since those juveniles could be easily domesticated and used for reproductive technologies such as surrogate propagation (De Siqueira-Silva et al, 2018).…”
