Birth outcome in women with breast cancer

Abstract: We investigated whether maternal breast cancer affects birth outcome in a nationwide cohort study of 695 births from 1973 to 2002 of women with breast cancer with respect to preterm birth, low birth weight at term, stillbirth and congenital abnormalities as well as mean birth weight, compared with the outcomes of 33 443 births from unaffected mothers. There was no excess risk of adverse birth outcome for the 216 newborns of women with breast cancer before pregnancy. Stratification by mother's treatment did not… Show more

“…In the series of Velentgas et al [22], the risk of miscarriage was significantly higher for women with a history of breast cancer, when compared with the matched control group (RR 1.7, 24% vs. 18%, P < 0.05). Langagergaard et al [77] conducted a population-based cohort study in which 216 births occurring after breast cancer diagnosis were compared with a matched cohort of 10,453 births by Danish women without previous breast cancer. While exposure to serious periconceptional life events might reduce the male proportion of offspring, partly because of differential abortion of male embryos [78], the sex ratios in the offspring of treated breast cancer patients were equal, similar to those in the comparison cohort.…”

“…There is no evidence that pregnancy in BC survivors is associated with any risk to the infant's health. Data from 2 large population-based cohort studies are rather reassuring in this regard [28,29]. However in the Swedish cohort, an increased risk of delivery complications, caesarean section, very preterm birth (< 32 weeks), and low birth weight (< 1,500 g) were reported compared to healthy controls.…”
