Bixa orellana L. (achiote) tissue culture: a review

Abstract: Bixa orellana L. (achiote) is a commercially important plant grown for its natural dye annatto, which is derived from the arils of seeds. Annatto, which contains the antioxidant bixin, is used in food, cosmetic, and textile industries as a natural colorant. Even though B. orellana can be propagated by seed, established tissue culture and in vitro propagation protocols exist for this plant. Organogeneses, both axillary and adventitious, as well as somatic embryogenesis, have been successfully induced from diffe… Show more

“…The production results of fingerroot in Indonesia experienced a gradual decrease from 2014-2016 and in the last few years decreased by 24.46% [4]. The in vitro environment provides optimized conditions where explants can be induced to form the desired organ or plantlet [5]. Tissue culture techniques have been widely exploited for large-scale propagation.…”

“…However, conventional propagation practice is time-consuming and labor-intensive and requires the availability of many plants for plantation or afforestation. Notwithstanding these challenges, plant cell, tissue, and organ culture techniques will become increasingly important in the cultivation of medicinal, as well as aromatic, plants by providing healthy and disease-free planting stock that can be widely utilized in commercial propagation and reforestation programs [ 14 , 15 ]. The information on actual genetic structure and the cryptic number of the differentiated genetic resources are valuable aids not only for developing in vitro regeneration protocols but also for the conservation of these medicinal plants.…”
