Bladder Cancer Risk in Painters: a Review of the Epidemiological Evidence, 1989–2004*

Abstract: Epidemiological studies on the potential association between painting and the risk of bladder cancer published after the Monograph of the International Agency for Research on Cancer N. 47 of 1989 have been systematically reviewed. These included four cohort studies on the incidence of bladder cancer among painters, with a pooled relative risk (RR) of 1.10 (95% confidence interval, CI, 1.03-1.18), based on 893 cases observed. The corresponding summary RR from four cohort studies on mortality was 1.23 (95% CI 1.… Show more

“…Occupational exposure to aromatic amines has long been recognized a risk factor for bladder cancer (Negri et al, 1989;Kogevinas et al, 2003;Bosetti et al, 2005;Pira et al, 2010;Pira et al, 2012), accounting for up to 15% of cases in men from selected high-risk populations D'Avanzo et al, 1995). However, a selected number of occupations a priori deemed as being of high risk for bladder cancer showed only a moderate, nonsignificant excess risk, indicating that occupational exposures are not a major factor for bladder cancer in this, mainly rural, population.…”

“…They restricted their analysis to cohort studies that reported a standardized mortality ratio (SMR) or relative risk (RR) based on person-time at risk and included observed numbers of death or confidence intervals (CIs). In a more recent meta-analysis of cancer risk in painters, Bosetti et al (2005) identified both cohort and case-control studies published between 1989 and 2004; however, the meta-analysis only considered bladder cancer.…”

“…Five meta-analyses have demonstrated a significant or borderline significant increased incidence of or mortality from bladder cancer among persons occupationally exposed as a painter (Bachand et al, 2010a,b;Bosetti et al, 2005;Chen and Seaton, 1998;Guha et al, 2010;Yamaguchi et al, 1991).…”
