Bleaching of discoloured root‐filled teeth

Abstract: In this study a simple and time–saving method for bleaching of discoloured root‐filled teeth is presented. The method used sodium perborate moistened with water and the access cavity is temporarily sealed with Cavit® between visits. Bleaching was carried out in 95 teeth, with a satisfactory initial result in 90% of the cases. After 3 years of observation, recurrence of discolouration was found in 20% of the teeth seen at follow‐up examination. The method is easy, fast and essentially without complications. It … Show more

“…The success rate ranges from 93% to 100% with 1-to 6-year follow-ups, [1][2][3][4] although other studies have reported lower rates of 50% to 79% over 3 to 8 years. 5,6 Despite the obvious benefits of the ability of hydrogen peroxide-containing agents to eliminate stains by cleaving double bonds of pigmented molecules, negative effects on dentin at the morphological, 7 chemical, 8 and biomechanical 9 levels have been reported. The pH of the bleach formulation may play a critical role in these effects.…”

“…Estes resultados vão ao encontro de outras pesquisas clínicas. Em estudos em que foi utilizado o vedamento cervical 1,3,21 , ou a associação de substâncias menos caústicas, como o perborato de só-dio mais água 17 , não foi encontrado nenhum caso de RCE.…”

“…However, there is a possibility of recurring discoloration, which means that the initial results cannot be considered permanent. Several authors have evaluated the incidence of color regression one to six years after internal bleaching and reported different percentages of darkening (8,11,12). While Holmstrup et al (12) and Brown (13) both reported a success rate of 75% or more after one to five years.…”

While Holmstrup et al (12) and Brown (13) both reported a success rate of 75% or more after one to five years. In the present case we found more than 90% success rate without change in the colour and with no pericapical changes in the tooth.…”
