Blockchain Design for an Embedded System

Abstract: This paper proposes a blockchain-based mapping protocol for distributed robotic systems running on embedded hardware. This protocol was developed for a robotic system designed to locomote on lattice structures for space applications. A consensus mechanism, Proof of Validity, is introduced to allow the effort of mining blocks to correlate with the desired tasks the robotic system was designed for. These robots communicate using peer-topeer LoRa radio. Options, trade-offs and considerations for implementing bloc… Show more

“…However, there is research already analyzing the impact of this combination in challenging scenarios such as cities, 7 social media, 8 or even outer space. 2 It is expected that these papers can provide researchers with valuable resources and motivations to work on the challenging issues in this new research topic. There is convincing evidence that blockchain technology can play a vital role in assisting robots and cyber-physical systems in becoming accountable, verifiable, and trusted "partners" not only inside factories but in our homes, communities, cities, and even in extraterrestrial operations.…”

“…In Falcone et al, a blockchain-based mapping protocol for distributed robotic systems running on embedded hardware is proposed. 2 This protocol was developed for a robotic system designed to move on lattice structures for space applications. Options, trade-offs, and considerations for implementing blockchain technology on an embedded system with wireless radio communication are explored.…”

“…The system is implemented on top of robots running the Robot Operating System (ROS) using the Tendermint consensus protocol. In [63], the authors described the mapping protocol of blockchain for distributed multiple robot systems. The protocol was developed based on designing an embedded system with considering options and trade-offs for implementing blockchain.…”

“…Therefore, pursuing a more memory optimized solution while allowing a high rate of transactions, we looked for other solutions. Falcone et al (2019) also studied the performance aspects. The authors designed a new type of blockchain, with a specific protocol, intended for extremely low computation power devices (e.g., space applications).…”
