Blockchain technology: a troubleshooter for blood cold chains

Abstract: Purpose Blood cold chain (BCC) represents a system for preserving the blood during its journey from the donor to the ultimate transfusion site. Existing BCCs have many drawbacks related to information transparency and information security. Secured and real-time information sharing in BCC can bring several benefits. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the issues in typical BCCs and to explore the scope of blockchain in the management of BCCs. Design/methodology/approach Issues in the existing BCCs are i… Show more

“…The necessity of using blockchain and other technologies in the cold chain has been proven in numerous studies. Smart contracts combining blockchain and IoT technologies applied in the blood cold chain (BCC) can ensure the quality of blood or blood products [ 70 ]. Using blockchain technology (BCT) in the food cold chain, is expected to provide traceability and sustainability for food products [ 71 ].…”

“…Regarding this outcome, lack of resources required for their implementation in operation gives negative impact due to industry 4.0. An example that we can see is blockchain is a type of internet technology that makes it possible to send money and other valuables over the internet in a safe way without the help of a financial institution (Asokan et al, 2022). On the other hand, IoTbased huge aeroplanes (LSPs) in the whole supply chain will be a big step toward more people using these technologies.…”
