Blood pressure in the first year of life in healthy infants born at term

Abstract: Neonatal hypertension occurs in up to 2% of neonatal intensive care survivors and in up to 3% of all neonates. Normal blood pressure (BP) measurements are required to diagnose and manage appropriately both hypotension and hypertension in the neonate and infant. The aim of this study was to provide normative BP measurements during the first year of life of healthy infants born at term, using an oscillometric method. Neonates were enrolled from August 2003 to August 2005. Exclusion criteria included: infants of … Show more

“…A 2.8% prevalence of hypertension in our subjects in three consecutive visits is similar to a study done by Friedman and Hustead which is 2.6% but twice as high as the Australian study which is 1.3% (11,12). In most reports the prevalence of hypertension in survivors of the neonatal intensive care units ranges from 0.2-3% (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). This is in agreement with our finding.…”

“…Intravenous fluids were then weaned and after initiation of cortisol replacement treatment on DOL 89, the patient experienced transient hyponatremia and hyperkalemia which resolved spontaneously over 48 h (the mild hyperkalemia on DOL 91–98 was attributed to hemolysis). Blood pressure normal ranges are from Kent et al [13]. …”
