Bloom and Harvest Dates, Fruit Quality Attributes, and Yield of Modern Peach Cultivars in the Intermountain Western United States

Abstract: Production of peaches (Prunus persica) in southwestern Idaho and other states in the intermountain western United States has increased during recent years, requiring information on the performance of modern cultivars in the region. Thus, a long-term project was conducted to investigate bloom date, harvest date, cumulative growing degree-days, fruit quality, and yield of various yellow- and white-fleshed peaches under conditions of southwestern Idaho during 2003 to 2007. The a… Show more

“…Fruit of this cultivar has relatively large size (average = 255.2 g) with over 12% soluble solids content. 17 'Early Rich', 'Elegant Lady', 'Royal Glory', and 'Sweet Dream' have higher yield than many other cultivars. Although the first comprehensive studies of peach volatile production were performed about 50 years ago, 18 no studies on the relationships between volatile production, standard quality, and sensory evaluation in cold-stored peaches have been previously published in the literature to our knowledge.…”

“…Most postharvest studies on this variety have been concerned with the development of rot, the effects of water stress on fruit quality, or the quality of fresh-cut peach. , ‘Sweet Dream’ has red to dark maroon color skin and yellow with red blush flesh color. Fruit of this cultivar has relatively large size (average = 255.2 g) with over 12% soluble solids content . ‘Early Rich’, ‘Elegant Lady’, ‘Royal Glory’, and ‘Sweet Dream’ have higher yield than many other cultivars.…”

“…No package types were acceptable immediately after testing for nonmelting flesh peaches. However, nonmelting flesh peaches in all package types remained acceptable at the 24‐h measurement, which was unexpected, likely due to the use of the ‘Zee Lady’ cultivar, which is known to be resilient in the shipping environment (Figure 10) [51].…”

“…Most fruit quality studies in peach have focused on individual quality characteristics such as texture, aroma, color, size, sugar concentration, and acidity (Contador et al, 2015;Crisosto and Crisosto, 2005;Fallahi et al, 2009aFallahi et al, , 2009bVisai and Vanoli, 1997). A collection of observable quality descriptors for individual cultivars is yet to be established for the southeastern United States.…”
