Blue sucker stock characteristics in the upper Yazoo River basin, Mississippi, USA

Abstract: Blue sucker Cycleptus elongatus (L.) in the upper Yazoo River basin, Mississippi, USA was studied using overnight hoop net sets (n = 4093) during 1988 and 1990–1998 to determine the influence of channel dredging. There were 264 blue suckers captured, ranging from 3 to 11 years of age. Length ranged from 265 to 700 mm and weight from 120 to 4700 g. Concurrent studies with smaller mesh hoop nets failed to capture any juvenile blue suckers. Catch‐per‐unit‐effort (CPUE: fish net−1) declined throughout the study in… Show more

“… Mean back‐calculated length at age of blue sucker collected in the Kansas River and other rivers in the Midwest and Southeast. The data for the Big Sioux and James River are from Morey & Berry (2003), Mississippi River are from Rupprecht & Jahn (1980), Neosho River are from Moss et al (1983) and the Yazoo River are from Hand & Jackson (2003). …”

“…Other studies have also collected relatively few small fish using electric fishing (Rupprecht & Jahn 1980; Moss et al. 1983; Peterson, Nicholson, Snyder & Fulling 1999; Hand & Jackson 2003; Morey & Berry 2003; Vokoun et al. 2003).…”

“…The blue sucker, Cycleptus elongatus (Lesueur), is found throughout the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio river drainages from Montana to Mexico and east to Pennsylvania (Moss, Scanlan & Anderson 1983; Hand & Jackson 2003; Morey & Berry 2003). This obligate, large‐river species typically inhabits riffle and run habitats associated with sand, gravel and cobble substrates for spawning and feeding (Moss et al.…”

Blue sucker represent a significant component of large river ecosystems, historically supporting substantial commercial fisheries in the Mississippi River drainage with catches exceeding 1 million kg in the late 1800s (Coker 1929; Morey & Berry 2003).…”
