“…The most commonly injured sites are at the level of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) (33%), renal arteries (24%), and between the IMA and aortic bifurcation (19%). 4 Most of the literature about BAAI is limited to case reports and small cases series, with three literature reviews over 3 decades and less than 200 cases in the current reported world literature reflecting the rarity of this entity. 2,4,5 We sought to describe the experience of a highvolume trauma center during the past 15 years and to provide a contemporary review of the literature to better understand the natural history and management options of this injury.…”

“…Two major mechanisms have been proposed to explain this particular location: a partially longitudinal deceleration force, especially in seat-belt injuries [3], or direct compression of the abdominal aorta. The most common site of traumatic abdominal aortic dissection is, as in our cases, below the inferior mesenteric artery, but can involve other parts of the abdominal aorta [1]. The results are an intimal tear or damage to the vasa vasorum with an intramural hematoma, secondarily complicated by progressive fibrosis with narrowing of the lumen [4].…”
